Ron Down
Ron served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 5 years, from 1954 to 1959. He received his basic training at H.M.C.S. Cornwallis, after his enlistment on July 27th, 1954, in Kingston, Ontario.
He served on the HMCS Crusader, a Destroyer Escort ship, which at the time was the fastest ship in the Navy. From the Crusader, he was posted to Naval Airbase, HMCS Shearwater. Ron served here, with a utility squadron responsible for repairing planes, who were returning to the HMCS Bonaventure. Ron also served on the HMCS Wallaceburg, a Great Lakes minesweeper, where he trained naval reserve personnel.
