Robert Connaty
Robert served during the Second World War with C. Squadron 6th Armoured Regiment (1st Hussars). He enlisted at the age of 21 in Toronto, Ontario. After completing basic training at Camp Borden, Robert left for oversees. Trained as a cook, Robert serving in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands until the end of the war.
A few stories shared by family….
dad’s feet were too big for combat boots, so his nickname was “Feets”
dad got mono during the was and he would fall asleep between serving the troops as they went along the lines
dad remembers how much the Dutch appreciated their liberators
at one point, dad was walking through a large building with large pillars with a couple of other men. They felt they were being watched, but could not see anyone. It turned out that Germans were hiding behind the pillars an thought they were scouts so did not shoot them as the Germans did not want the army coming off after them for shooting scouts
