Richard Nathaniel (Dick) Darrell
Royal Canadian Air Force - 412th Squadron
Dick enlisted on with the RCAF on December 6, 1941 in Fort William Ontario, at the age of 20.
He attended the Galt Aircraft School where he became a Leading Aircraftman.
Galt Aircraft School was established in Galt, Ontario (now Cambridge) in 1939. AT Galt Aircraft School students were taught various specialized skills associated with the airplane construction including aero engine, air frame, armourers, and instrument making to members of the RCAF.
Dick served in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands as an Aircraft Mechanic, and jobs associated with air force transportation. Dick’s D-Day preparations included painting on the special white markings (D-Day stripes) on the Spitfires just prior to June 6, 1944.
Dick was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp, 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star and the Defence Medal.
