Patrick O'Brien
The day after England declared war (September 3, 1939) Patrick
volunteered for the British Army and was assigned to the East Lancashire Regiment. After training, he was sent with the British
Expeditionary Force (BEF) to France , on April 15 1940. From May
10 to June 2 the BEF retreated and Patrick was among the last
evacuees from Dunkirk, France.
His mother received the first of four Missing In Action (MIA)
telegrams she had for Patrick during the war. March 14, 1941 he
was reassigned to Royal Signal Corps and a number of various
Army Corps. He fought in North Africa, Greece, and Italy before taking
part in D-Day landing, June 1944. Patrick then fought as a
Sergeant, through France, Belgium and Germany until end of war.
He met Daisy Ovens while on R&R camp in Brussels, Belgium in 1945.
and they were married in 1946. Five years later, they moved to
Uxbridge, Ontario, in June 1951.
