Miriam Knowles
Miriam Knowles joined the Canadian Women Army Corps in 1942 in Toronto at 19 years of age. She completed her basic training in Kitchener, ON. She served in Kitchener, Halifax and sailed overseas, being posted in England, France, Germany and the Netherlands performing administrative duties in Army Headquarters. An overseas posting was the most desired role, and only three thousand CWACs served overseas out of the 55,000 women who enlisted. Appointment to overseas work was highly competitive, validating a woman’s skilled proficiency and contribution to the war effort. Miriam finished her service with the CWAG as a Sergeant, and returned to Canada at the end of the war.
