James T. Hunt

When Germany invaded Norway on April 9, 1940, the Norwegian ships that were in allied waters at the time were requisitioned by the exiled Royal Norwegian government for trans-Atlantic crossings in support of the war effort.  Jim Hunt was 16 years old living in Toronto at the time; a boy who was too young to join the Royal Canadian Navy, but a young man who wanted to help provide for his family, so, with three years of sea cadet training under his belt, and the passing of his Naval exams for the signals corps, Jim decided to join the Norwegian Merchant Navy.  Jim travelled worldwide in a tanker carrying high octane gasoline during the war.  He travelled throughout the Mediterranean, and made many trans-Atlantic crossings accompanied by both Canadian and American escorts.  He was paid 110 dollars a month, including 10 extra for danger pay.
