George Ballinger
Born in Hereford, England on July 15, 1887, George Ballinger became an engineer. He and his wife, Mary Anne, emigrated to Canada, and settled in Toronto. He signed up to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force on February 5, 1916, and sailed to England on the S. S. Olympic, arriving May 7, 1916 with the 83rd Battalion. Private Ballinger (#172433) transferred to the 12th Battalion CEF in July, and the 3rd Battalion CEF on October 9th that year. He saw action in France, was wounded at Hill 70, and died of those wounds August 9, 1917. He is buried at Bully-let-Mines with 38 other Canadians. On his gravestone there is a message from his wife 'There is a hole in our hearts that will never be filled’.
