George A. Firby

Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1896, George Firby enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in 1916. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in 1917 and obtained his pilots wings the same year. He served with the RFC and later with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in France and was wounded over Germany in 1918.

In 1941 he enlisted with the RCAF, serving first as a Link Trainer instructor (see photo below) at No. 3 Initial Training School in Victoriaville, Quebec.  He was then stationed at No. 10 UAT Squadron at McGill University, then at No. 3 Training Command in charge of University Air Training from 1942-45. Finally, in administration duties with the Organization & Establishment Section of No. 1 Air Command, he was discharged in 1945 at the rank of Squadron Leader.
