Eric Maxwell Hammond
Eric was the uncle that I never got to meet. He served by operating a tank in the Second World War. He looked similar to his brother Don, my Dad. I'm told he also had a wonderful sense of humour. Other siblings were Robert, Violet, James, and baby Hubert. Mom was Dinah Elizabeth Sinclair Hammond, and Dad was Thomas Hammond. My cousin Eric is named after Uncle Eric. Sadly, Uncle Eric was killed in the line of duty at age 23. He was engaged to be married to an English lady. Uncle Eric is buried at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. I was able to visit his grave at age 9, and a few years ago with the high school students from Uxbridge Secondary School. My daughter Olivia has also visited her great Uncle Eric's grave when she was in high school. When there, both Olivia and I felt such love for this man we have yet to meet. Some day my sweet Uncle Eric, I love you!
