Donald Hammond
Don Hammond, my dad, served as a mechanic during the end of the war and in occupied Germany. He did a number of jobs what ever was needed at the time. Like many veterans he wasn't anxious to speak of many stories of his time serving, but I know he was very proud to serve. A very difficult time for him was hearing that his brother Eric had been killed. I still have the letter from the Chaplain informing him that his brother was placed in a temporary grave and that he had held a service for him. My father never really healed from this loss, as if he would. He had already lost a brother Hubert in infancy.
My Dad died December 27th, 2001. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He is loved and missed every day. Submitted by Karen Hammond-Croxall.
