Donald Cecil MacPhail-475929
Donald enlisted with the 3rd University Coy, Canadian Expeditionary Force, in Toronto on August 20, 1915. He shipped overseas, arriving in England on September 14, 1915, where he was transferred to the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). He was ‘taken on strength’, and arrived in France to Canadian Base Depot on December 1, 1915. He left DBD for the field on February 4, 1916. During an attack at Sanctuary Wood, where the Canadian Corps fought in defense of the Ypres, Belgium, a high explosive shell burst near Donald, and he was wounded in the left wrist. The shrapnel effects limited 90% of his movement in his wrist, resulting in him being sent back to Canada for his recovery, leaving England on March 5, 1917.
