David was working in Toronto, ON when enlisted with the 134th Overseas Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force, 48th Highlanders on January 16th, 1916. He trained in the Horticulture Building, CNE Grounds, at Base Borden, and at Niagara-on-the-lake.

He sailed from Halifax on the SS Scotian, on August 8, 1916, arriving in Liverpool, England on the 19th of that same month; then reporting to Bramshott Camp in Hampshire England. He transferred to the 15th Battalion, at which time he crossed the channel for service in France, mid October 1917, and fought along the front lines, including at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

He was killed in Action on April 20, 1917 near Willerval France, and is memorialized on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Givenchy-en-Gohelle, France.
