Charles Garnet Faulkner-C115086
Second World War veteran - 1943-1945
Algonquin Regiment
Charles successfully enlisted with the Canadian Army in May 1943 in Kingston, Ontario at 20 years of age. Twice previously he had attempted to enlist….but with a weight of only 112 pounds…..he had to wait! He took basic training in Peterborough, soon after being sent to Delbert, Nova Scotia.
Charles sailed to England, furthered on to Belgium, and after a month joined the Algonquin Regiment just outside of Brussels. The Regiment was awarded Battle Honours FALAISE; Falaise Road; The Laison; Chambois; The Seine, 1944; Moerkerke; THE SCHELDT; Breskens Pocket; The Lower Maas; THE RHINELAND; The Hochwald; Veen; Küsten Canal; Bad Zwischenahn; NORTH-WEST EUROPE, 1944-1945.
Charles was wounded in the back at Küsten Canal, in Germany, but was fortunate as his belt reduced the impact and therefore the injury. He returned to the Algonquins after a month, and pushed further with the Regiment into the Netherlands.
One memorable moment that Charles remembered took place just outside Wierden in the Netherlands. He and other soldiers were dug in and a lady who lived nearby came out of her house and handed him a pair of wooden shoes, green with windmills painted on them. He kept them as a memento.
Charles finished the war in the Netherlands.
