Albert Gilbert

Albert enlisted with the Grey and Simcoe Foresters, Canadian Army in 1940 in Owen Sound. He was 17 years of age. He received his basic training in Owen Sound, Barrie and Niagara Falls, ON.

The Regiment converted to armour - 26th Army Tank Regiment (Grey and Simcoe Foresters), CAC, CASF on 15 May 1942,and they embarked on 17 June 1943 for Great Britain.

Overseas, Albert served as a Wireless Radio Operator with the armoured division in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

Years later, Albert fondly remembered a return trip to the Netherlands. During the war years, Albert and his tank comrades were staying/hiding with a Dutch family They became friends. When Albert and his wife visited the family in a 2000 return visit, the Dutch family still well remembered him and still had his photo on their mantel.

We thank Albert for his service.
